Telefónica Digital has appointed Simon Birkenhead as its global advertising sales director. He will join in May and report to Telefónica Digital director of advertising Shaun Gregory. Birkenhead, who has worked at Google for the past four years, will be responsible for global advertising sales within Telefónica’s recently formed Digital unit.

He joined Google in February 2008 as global business leader before taking up his most recent role at the company in December 2009. Telefónica Digital was formed last year to drive growth opportunities in the digital world. Telefónica Digital said advertising represents one of its key focus digital services as it “seeks to unlock the huge potential within its mobile, fixed and TV services for advertisers”.

Gregory said: “We are at the beginning of a very exciting journey as we start to create a truly global advertising business. “Simon’s experience and track record speak for themselves and will be instrumental in pulling our assets together and driving growth through our local teams.”

Birkenhead added: “Over the last year I have seen an acceleration of interest from major brands and agencies to establish global technology partnerships and this new role will help Telefónica to position itself as one of a select few companies invited into these discussions.”
