McTear’s has reinforced its position as the world’s premier whisky auctioneer with the announcement of record sales in 2010 and the appointment of one of the country’s leading wine and whisky experts as Head of Whisky Sales.
Former UK Sommelier of the Year, Johnny Walker, joins the Glasgow based company following a prestigious career that has seen him travel the globe as a whisky ambassador and hold top positions in some of the UK’s leading hotels and restaurants.
The appointment was announced as McTear’s revealed a 32% uplift in sales during 2010 to £572,070.
“Over the past few years we have seen interest in our whisky auctions increase dramatically, as more and more investors at home and overseas turn to the amber nectar as a promising investment opportunity,” says Brian Clements, Managing Director at McTear’s.
“In 2010 we saw sales increase by 32% and we expect this upward trend to continue in 2011.”
To reflect the growing interest in the whisky and wine auctions, McTear’s is planning to adapt the sales calendar to include special ‘area’ events to complement the general whisky auctions which take place on a quarterly basis.
On Johnny Walker’s appointment, Brian Clements said: “Johnny is one of the most prominent figures in the world of wine and whisky and his skills are sought out by whisky and wine lovers across the globe. I am delighted that he has agreed to bring his world class skills and extensive experience to the world’s premiere whisky auctions.
“In addition to his whisky expertise, Johnny’s experience and contacts in the wine industry will be important as we develop this side of the auction business over the coming year.”
Johnny Walker added: “The McTear’s whisky auctions are recognised as the premiere events of their kind in the world with some fantastic examples of the amber nectar going under the hammer. Brian and his team have big plans to develop the auctions in 2011 and I am delighted to be a part of this expansion programme.”
Moving forward Johnny Walker will balance his time between his role at McTear’s, his position as Director of Wine & Spirits at Malmaison Hotels and his international speaking commitments.
