Following costly IT mistakes in the NHS, such as the £12.7bn NHS national programme, cabinet office minister Frances Maude has announced that future contracts should be ‘cheaper, smaller and off-the-shelf’.

Government contracts have traditionally been good business for sales professionals, but this news will be a major concern for those supplying the public sector. Addressing an audience of chief executives from key government suppliers such as BT, Hewlett Packard, IBM and CapGemini, Maude announced that the way government procures was about to change.
